Comet Hale-Bopp (C/1995 O1)

This remarkable comet was discovered in mid-1995, and brightened dramatically as it approached the Sun. It was ultimately visible to the naked eye for 18 months, and is probably the most widely observed comet of the last century. It reached perihelion on 1 April 1997. It has an orbital period of several thousand years.
